Students have the knowledge about the general structure of contemporary Islamic thought and the ideas of Muslim thinkers of this period; have the ability to offer the solutions to the problems of modern times.

General structure of Islamic thought. Basic characteristics of contemporary Islamic thought. The problems of contemporary Islamic thought. Abu al-Ala al-Mawdudi; his works and opinions. Fazlurrahman and Islamic modernism. Ismail Raji al-Faruqi and the Islamization of the knowledge. Naqib al-Attas and the Islamization of the knowledge. Syed Hossein Nasr and traditionalism. Muhammad Hamidullah; his works and opinions. Muhammad Arkoun and historicism. Hasan Hanafi and renewalism. Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd and the understanding of Quran. Muhammad Abid al-Jabiri; his works and opinions. Hayrettin Karaman and Islam in Modern Turkey.
