Objectives of the Course
To teach the mineralogy, mineral-chemistry, geochemistry and isotopic aspects of rocks and their genesis.

Course Contents
Igneous and metamorphic rock terminology, plate tectonism, formation of magmas, igneous rocks of continental and oceanic lithosphere and their petrology, metamorphic processes, radiometric age dating and isotopes in igneous processes.

2Petrological relationships amongst rock-mineralogy, rock-chemistry and mineral chemistry.
3Interior of Earth and formation of magmas.
4Magmatic differentiation, partial melting, assimilation and magma series.
5Igneous rocks of the oceanic lithosphere.
6Igneous rocks of the continental lithosphere.
7Basic analytical tecniques: XRF, ICP-(AES/MS), Microprobe.
8Major and trace element chemistry, data display, variation diagrams.
9Mid term exam
10Mantle petrology.
11Granite petrology.
12Metamorphism, metamorphic rocks and plate tectonics, metamorphic reactions.
13Radiometric age dating and isotopes in igneous processes.
14Plate tectonics and magmatism.
15Review and overall discussions.
