Objectives of the Course
The purpose of this course is to teach to the students what GIS is, in which application areas can be used, and especially what application areas in geology are. For these purposes, it is aimed to be learn a GIS software, digitizing and production of a intelligent map.

Course Contents
An overview to information systems. Spatial and non-spatial information systems. Geographical ınformation systems; descriptions and application areas. Data models. Database. Topological data structures and topology concept. Database creation in GIS. Inspection of data quality. Spatial analysis, querries, buffer analysis and other spatial analysis in GIS. Data representation in GIS. GIS-based map production approaches. Software, hardware and system selection in GIS. Application areas in GIS. GIS organizations.

1Basic map knowledges, what is a map and scale?, map projections, map identification
2Introduction to geographical information systems, information systems, spatial and non-spatial information systems, what is GIS?
3Components of GIS, vector and raster data models in GIS, database and attribute data, data displaying.
4Data acquasition methods in GIS, data obtaining by remote sensing and GPS, digitizing of published maps.
5Spatial analysis and querries, overlay and union process, digital elevation modelling and TIN data model
6Grid analysis, statistical analysis
7Introduction to ArcGIS software, introduction to menu of the software, creation of *. Shape files and assigning the coordinate data
8Mid-term exam
9Georeferencing in ArcMap, georeferencing, digitizing and creating an attribute table containing elevation data of a topographical sheet
10Application exam in computer laboratory
11Use of 3D and spatial analyst extentions, slope and aspect data creations using by digitized topographical map
12Digitizing of a published geological map and creation of attribute table of it
13Spatial analysis of produced geology, slope and aspect maps, creation of layouts
14Use of GIS in geology, munucipility applications by GIS, natural hazard management applications by GIS
